ITEM DESCRIPTION Release the Kraken! Like the great watery beasts of fictional lore, Chris Crooks’ grass-bound, giant squid brings fantasy to life. His magnificent monster adds a dramatic statement to green spaces as it rises up through waves of grass and inspires uproarious reactions from all who cross its path. Crooks crafts each four-tentacled beast from pieces of hand-cut metal that are aged with a bright rust patina. He then bends and shapes his tentacles, suckers, and bulbous head, giving the piece added ferocity and dimensionality. Segments affixed with mounting brackets that hold 6 stakes. Made from 16 gauge mild steel. Head: 22″ L x 4″ W x 22″ H; Tentacles vary from 9″ – 18.5 H. Includes 11 steel stakes. Rust patina will become darker and richer with age. About the Artist I started out from my garage. As the business grew, and my wifes and neighbors’ patience stretched, it was time to move to an industrial space. There I can bang and grind at all hours of the night. It’s 1,000 square feet of pure metalworking nirvana. Chris Crooks has taken a somewhat winding road to get to where is nowcreating imaginative lawn sculptures inspired by the southwest landscape he calls home. After graduating from the Art Institute of Philadelphia, Chris worked in advertising, then ran a printing business with his wife, while painting during his free time. Eventually, he began designing and making his first metal sculpture collection from his studio nestled in the foothills of the Santa Rita mountains, just outside Tucson. I always wanted to make a living doing something genuinely enjoyable, he says. To get up in the morning raring to go, and never having enough time to do everything you want to do.
